SFC MEN’S BASKETBALL

BIG SECOND HALF LEADS TO SAINTS VICTORY OVER SCF, 81-59

Gainesville, FL – After a slow first half, the Santa Fe Saints (3-1) turned it on and scored 51 points in the second period to cruise past the State College of Florida “Manatees”, 81-59.

Both teams struggled to score through the first ten minutes, but Saints freshman guard Chuck Ford caught fire with three minutes to go, knocking down three three point shots in the last three minutes to give the Saints a 30-20 halftime lead.

“I’m proud of the way out defense played tonight,” said coach Chris Mowry.  “To hold a team to 20 in a half takes a total team effort.”

Chris Baez opened the second half by hitting the Saints fourth three point shot in a row, stretching the lead to 33-20.  Five minutes later, with 14:01 to go, Baez took a nice pass from Marlon Rivera and laid it in to give SFC a 21 point advantage, 49-28.

Iran Hollis and Altavious Carter also got in the mix, making consecutive three point shots to make the score 62-38.

“Iran had a great second half shooting the ball and rebounding,” said Mowry.  “He did a lot of good things tonight and played very hard.”

SFC took their largest lead of the game, 71-44, on a Branimir Mikulic three pointer, giving the Saints eight three’s in the second half and 11 for the game.

The Saints had five players in double figure scoring for the game, Chuck Ford led the way with 12, Chad Renfro, Chris Baez and Iran Hollis each had 11 and Branimir Mikulic had 10.  Marlon Rivera recorded double digit assists with 11 and Renfro paced SFC with four steals.

“I was very happy with the effort our guys gave tonight,” said Mowry.  “I was pleased with the enthusiasm from not only the guys on the floor, but also the bench.”

Next up for the Saints is their first road game of the year at Indian River State College on Saturday at 4:00pm.  The Pioneers defeated SFC earlier this season by a score of 69-61.

“Saturday is our first road test of the season,” said Mowry.  “It will be a new experience for some of our players.  We are going to give our best effort and hopefully come away with a win.”
