SAINTS FALL TO INDIAN RIVER, 75-68

Gainesville, FL – The FCCAA #8 Indian River State Pioneers (3-1) pulled off the upset Friday night, defeating FCCAA #5 and NJCAA #17 Santa Fe College(5-1) to hand the Saints their first loss of the season.

“This was a tough loss, but it was a good chance for our team to learn more about ourselves,” said Coach Chanda Stebbins. “Hopefully we will take what we learned and get better the rest of the way.”

Both teams started slow on offense, with neither the Saints or Pioneers reaching double digits until the ten minuet mark when IRSC took an 11-5 lead. Indian River pushed the lead to double digits twice, taking their largest lead at the 3:25 mark, 28-17.

The Saints closed the gap with a Tracie Sneed three pointer and India Johnson hit a short jumper to make the halftime score 31-23.

Lanita Bartley did what she could in the second half, scoring 16 points in the frame and Santa Fe closed the gap to four points, but Indian River was too much down the stretch. The Pioneers made nine free throws in the final six minutes to seal the win.

“Their posts did a great job getting position and rebounding,” said Stebbins. “They were a lot more physical than we were. We will have to do a better job inside when the ball is in the air if we want to compete with teams like Indian River.”

Lanita Bartley paced the Saints with 21 points, six rebounds, five assists and seven steals and Tracie Sneed had 20 points, including four three pointers and four rebounds. Also in double figures for SFC were Demisha Mills with 10 points and Brandice Howard 10.

“Lanita and Tracie both played well again for us,” said Stebbins. “It was also good to see Demisha get after it a little bit and contribute solid minutes.”

Brittany Hardy led Indian River in scoring with 22 points and Shantale Bramble had 20 points and 13 rebounds.

The next game for the Saints is Tuesday, November 24 at Darton College (Albany, GA) at 5:30pm. The team will return home on December 1 to again play Darton College at 6:00pm.
