Medical Imagery Inspires Late Painter’s Work

The Student Life Art Gallery will be paying tribute to Santa Fe College alumnus Matthew Major, who went on to complete his BFA in painting at the University of Florida. His work features cellular landscapes and medical imagery inspired by his quest to understand diabetes, the disease that ultimately claimed his life last February.

The opening reception will be noon – 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, in the Student Life Art Gallery (located in S-141).

The elements used in Major’s works are not the result of imagination – they are all visible through either a regular or electron microscope. He said of his work, “I want to show people that we contain a universe within us just as we are contained within a universe; from the very small to the very large, life is an amazing journey.”
