Saints clamp down defensively for 66-53 win

The Santa Fe College women’s basketball team picked up a big win over Panhandle Conference opponent Tallahassee CC on Tuesday evening, defeating the Eagles 66-53.

The two teams were tied after the first quarter 15-15, but the Saints jumped all over the Eagles in the second quarter, building a seven point lead at one point before TCC rallied to get within one. Desa’Rai Shaw and Sonya Franklin each hit a bucket in the final two minutes of the half to put SF up by three at the break.

Santa Fe (4-3) came out in the second half and added to their lead immediately, leading by as many as 16 at one point before closing out the 13 point win.

“I am very proud of our player’s maturity and growth coming off a tough loss to Miami Dade,” said SF Coach Chanda Stebbins. “I liked our defensive effort and really felt like we improved and moved forward tonight.”

Three different players scored 13 points to lead Santa Fe. Desa’Rai Shaw, Sonya Franklin, and Rayven Wade each had double figures, and Wade led the way with 13 rebounds.

The Saints held an Eagles team that came in shooting 37% from the three point line, to a 2-for-21 night.

Santa Fe will now take to the road for games against the two top teams in the FCSAA Coaches Poll. They will battle #1 Gulf Coast State on Friday, November 20 at 8 p.m. CST in Panama City, and continue the next day against the defending National Champions and #2 ranked Chipola College at 1 p.m. CST.
