Gainesville, FL – Santa Fe Saints sophomore pitcher Robert Girgis (4-1) was at the top of his game Monday afternoon, shutting out the College of Central Florida over eight innings to lead SF to a 6-0 win over the Patriots.  The win keeps the Saints (23-8, 6-2 MFC) at the top of the Mid-Florida Conference standings.

“Girgis was tremendous today,” said SF Coach Johnny Wiggs. “He really pounded the strikezone and threw his off-speed stuff anytime to keep them off balance.  CF is a very good hitting team so eight shut outs was quite an effort.”

The Saints got to Central Florida starter and LSU Tigers commit Nate Pearson for four earned runs and eight hits over six innings. They plated two in the third, two more in the fifth and a pair of insurance runs in the ninth.

“We put together some good at bats against a real power arm in Pearson,” said Wiggs. “We were able to get his pitch count up by getting in deep counts and fouling off good pitchers.  Great execution in the ninth with Brandon Hernandez and Zuriel Collins getting us insurance runs with a safety squeeze and a suicide squeeze.”

Stephen Smith, Kyle Phillips, and Wyatt Meisterhans had two hits each and six different players had a RBI.  Ricky Miranda pitched a perfect ninth inning to finish off the win.

The Saints and Patriots will battle again on Wednesday, March 22, in Gainesville at 3 p.m.
