Music Professor and Band Director Dr. Steve Bingham, Ph.D., will direct all three bands—the Santa Fe Rhythm and Blues (R&B) Review, the Santa Fe Jazz Combo and the Santa Fe Big Band. Guest artist Kevin Hicks is a former trombone student from the University of Florida’s jazz program who now lives in Los Angeles.

First on the program is the R&B Review featuring music from Motown era. Vocalists Ivan Padilla, Luis Danger and Rowan Housden will perform “Superstition” by Stevie Wonder, “Ain’t No Sunshine” by Bill Withers, “Do You Love Me” by The Contours (from the movie “Dirty Dancing”) and “Hit the Road Jack,” written by Shirley Horn and made famous by Ray Charles.

The seven-piece Jazz Combo features SF’s winner of the Florida State College System Activities Association’s 2017 Winter Symposium Jazz Scholarship, Wyatt Thomas, on trombone. Thomas is joined by Steven Hutto, a dual enrollment student from Buchholz High School, on trumpet; Spencer Hoefert, a dual enrollment student from Santa Fe High School, on guitar; Ben Salhanick on bass and Noah Woolard on drums. Two faculty members, Steve Bingham on alto saxophone and Andrew Hamilton on piano, complete the group. Musical selections include “Fly Me to the Moon” featuring Avi Masri on vocals; “Footprints,” a jazz waltz by Wayne Shorter; “Seven Steps to Heaven,” a bebop up-tempo piece by Miles Davis; and “Wave,” a Latin tune by Antonio Carlos Jobim.

The last group to perform is the Santa Fe Big Band featuring five saxophones, five trombones and five trumpets plus a rhythm section and two vocalists. Diana Truman will sing “Route 66” by Chuck Berry and Julia Devin will perform “I Only Have Eyes for You” by The Flamingos. Guest artist Kevin Hicks will be featured as the band performs selections including “A Night in Tunisia” by Charlie Parker, “It Don’t Mean a Thing” by Irving Mills and Duke Ellington and “Moment’s Notice” by John Coltrane.

“Jazz Up Spring” is sponsored in part by SF College and the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture and Visit Gainesville, a Tourist Development Tax Grant from the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners in conjunction with the Alachua County Tourist Development Council.
