With music and lyrics by Marvin Hamlisch and Edward Kleban and choreography by Michael Bennett and Bob Avian, “A Chorus Line” tells the story of 17 dancers who are auditioning with a director for placement in a Broadway production. The musical opened on Broadway in July 1975 and is one of the longest-running Broadway shows ever. “A Chorus Line” was nominated for 12 Tony Awards and won nine, in addition to winning the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

“‘A Chorus Line’ is an important story to tell because it is the story of all of us,” said Theatre Professor Russell Schultz, who is directing the musical. “We are actors, dancers, singers. We all face a challenging industry and who we are is often defined by others. ‘A Chorus Line’ inspires everyone who sees it and helps people appreciate the perseverance and dedication of performers and what we do for audiences every night.”

The production involves approximately 80 students, faculty and staff from throughout the Santa Fe College Fine Arts Department, which is producing “A Chorus Line.” Music Professors Andrew Hamilton and Lynn Sandefur are providing musical and vocal direction, Dance Professor Sarah Harkness-Sebastian is handling the choreography, and Fine Arts Hall staff members are providing sound, lighting and Fine Arts Hall management support.

“The triple-threat training afforded to students of music, acting and dance by our stellar faculty, as well as the collaborative umbrella under which they all live while creating this great musical, is an immeasurable learning experience,” said Fine Arts Department Chairperson Alora Haynes. “The college built the Fine Arts Hall so students could have the opportunity to perform in high-caliber productions like ‘A Chorus Line.’ It’s not only the students who benefit! Our community benefits too from this great opportunity to see a proven audience pleaser performed in a professional manner by students who can hardly wait to get in front of an audience.”

Haynes has high praise for the talents of students, faculty and staff in her department. “We have so much talent here—dancers who sing well, singers who dance well, faculty and staff members who are perfectly equipped to design and stage all the elements of a spectacular show. Don’t miss ‘A Chorus Line’!”

“A Chorus Line” is sponsored in part by SF College, SF Student Leadership and Activities and the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture and Visit Gainesville, a Tourist Development Tax Grant from the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners in conjunction with the Alachua County Tourist Development Council.
