June 13, 2017 – For the second year in a row, Santa Fe College Saints pitcher Troy Bacon heard his name called at the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft, this time in the fourth round (110 overall) by the Atlanta Braves. In 2016, the Colorado Rockies drafted Bacon in the 37th round, but failed to sign him to a contract.
In his two year career at Santa Fe College, Bacon set the career mark for saves with 23, and holds the best ERA in school history at 1.18 (11 ER in 83.2 innings pitched). His 122 career strikeouts ranks him eighth all time in school history.
As a freshman, Bacon earned NJCAA All-America honors, was First Team FCSAA, First Team Mid-Florida Conference, FCSAA All-Tournament Team, NJCAA All-Gulf District, FCSAA Fireman of the Year, MFC Fireman of the Year, and MFC Pitcher of the Year.
His sophomore season resulted in First Team Mid-Florida Conference honors, Second Team FCSAA, and MFC Fireman of the Year.
Bacon is one of four Santa Fe College players to be selected in the top five rounds since 2009, joining Keon Broxton (3rd round – Milwaukee Brewers – 2009), Chris Lee (4th round – Baltimore Orioles – 2011), and Mallex Smith (5th Round – San Diego Padres – 2012).
The slot value for the 110th pick is $487,000. Bacon will have until July 15 to sign a contract. He is currently signed to play at Mississippi State University.
