Boo at the Zoo Collects Nearly 6000 Cans for Charity

Families make their way through the Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo during the annual Boo at the Zoo event on Tuesday Oct. 31, 2017 in Gainesville, FL. Zoo faculty, staff and students dress in costumes and pass out candy to trick-or-treaters

November 2, 2017 – The 23rd Annual Boo at the Zoo at the Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo was another wild success. Trick-or-treaters, all 5593 of them, showed up to see the Halloween-themed decorations, and of course, collect as much candy as they could.

SF Teaching Zoo Director Jonathan Miot thanked the students and staff for their dedication to getting the zoo ready for the event. This year’s Boo at the Zoo collected 5817 canned goods that will go to Catholic Charities and Santa Fe Harvest to help to families in need in our community.

In the 23 years SF’s Boo at the Zoo has been collecting canned goods, over 53.8 tons of food has been collected which works out to almost 90,000 meals.

Special thanks to the Boo at the Zoo sponsors – Dr. Jackson N. Sasser and his wife Layne Sasser, Florida Credit Union, Fun4GatorKids and Catholica Charities.

The students and staff at the SF Teaching Zoo hope everyone had a Happy Halloween and look forward to next year’s Boo at the Zoo.
