Music Professor and SF Band Director Dr. Steve Bingham, Ph.D., will conduct the band.

“Evening of Jazz is always a swingin’ evening and this year we have four singers from Lynn Sandefur’s vocal classes who will be performing with the Big Band,” Bingham said. Sandefur is also a music professor at Santa Fe College.

Candace Rhodes will sing “Stuff Like That There” in an arrangement adapted by Bette Midler. Diana Truman will perform George Gershwin’s “Love Is Here to Stay” that was made popular by Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron in the 1951 film, “An American in Paris.” Two singers, Henry Duban Vasquez and Mac Oliver, will sing “Come Fly With Me” that was written for Frank Sinatra.

Also on the program are:

  • “Groovin’ Hard” from the Buddy Rich Big Band’s 1970 album, “Keep the Customer Satisfied,” featuring several soloists as well as the whole saxophone section
  • “Don’t Get Sassy,” a swinging shuffle with piano
  • “Harlem Nocturne,” a tribute to Duke Ellington with an alto saxophone solo
  • “Don’t Steal My Stuff,” which Bingham describes as “a battle between the lead trumpet and the lead trombone”
  • “La Suerte de Los Tontos” (“Fortune of Fools”), a tribute to Stan Kenton’s big band
  • “Black Orpheus,” a high-energy Latin samba

The concert is sponsored in part by Santa Fe College, SF Student Life and the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs and the Florida Council on Arts and Culture and Visit Gainesville, a Tourist Development Tax Grant from the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners in conjunction with the Alachua County Tourist Development Council.
