SFC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
SAINTS DEFEAT PALM BEACH IN HOME OPENER, 92-81
Gainesville, FL – Lanita Bartley came up big again for Santa Fe College (2-0), scoring 29 points with five assists and seven steals to lead the #7 Saints to a victory over Palm Beach CC.
In a game marred by fouls and turnovers, the teams combined to shoot 80 free throws and commit 58 fouls. The Saints were 34-for-41 from the free throw line.
“We need to get better on defense,” said Coach Chanda Stebbins. “Our effort was fine, but our execution was poor. Our coaching staff is going to fix that.”
SFC took the early advantage and led by as many as 24 points in the first half, going up 36-12 after 21-1 run midway through the first period. PBCC closed the lead slightly and the Saints took a 44-25 lead into the break.
After a back and forth start to the second half, PBCC began to cut into the lead and got it down to 70-61 with five minutes to go in the game. The Panthers would get no closer however as Santa Fe knocked down their free throws to ice the game down the stretch.
Bartley led all scorers with 29 and was 17-for-20 from the free throw line with nine makes in the last eight minutes of the game. Tracie Sneed had 19 points and was 7-for-7 from the free throw line, Letiecia Davenport finished with 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting and Jaysha Russell had eight points, going 6-for-6 on free throws.
“You can’t send the opposing team to the free throw line 39 times and expect to win all the time,” said Stebbins. “Like I said before, the effort is there, we just need to get better at executing on both ends of the floor.”
The Saints will play at home again tomorrow against St. Pete College at 5:00pm. The men’s team precedes them at 1:00pm when they take on Indian River State College.
