February 1, 2022 – In honor of Black History Month, Santa Fe College’s Association of Black Faculty and Staff (ABFS) will offer information important to SF and the community at large.
This week, the topic is – Rosewood, Florida
Rosewood was a predominately Black community settled in the mid-1800’s. This Florida town was able to prosper during the challenging Reconstruction and Jim Crow eras. The community met racial violence on January 1, 1923, when a vigilante mob attacked the town, leaving five known fatalities and insurmountable damage. The story of Rosewood was relatively unknown for until the late 1900s. The remains of Rosewood can be found on State Road 24, Levy County, Florida on the road leading to Cedar Key; one lone home.
