August 8, 2024 – In a recent email to Santa Fe College faculty and staff, President Broadie announced the passing of Professor Harry Hooper.

Many knew Harry during his long and distinguished career at Santa Fe College, which began in 1997 when he started teaching as an adjunct professor of Accounting. This followed over 20 years in the private sector as an entrepreneur, business owner and leader in various medium and Fortune 500 companies in the U.S. and England.

Multilingual in English, Dutch, German and French, Harry earned his baccalaureate degree in Economics in 1970 from the University of London, London School of Economics and Political Science. After his years in the private sector, he returned to school for a Master of Accounting degree at the University of Florida, completing it in 1997. He served as a full-time member of the Accounting faculty since 2000, participated for many years as a member of the Executive Committee of the College Senate, was the lead faculty in Accounting, and played a significant role in developing the B.S. in Accounting and B.A.S. in Organizational Management. He was also active in the Florida Association of Accounting Educators and Teachers of Accounting at Two Year Colleges.

Harry was an active community member, serving as president of the Cedar Key Chamber of Commerce, a founding member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Cedar Key, a founding member and later president of the Levy County Public Schools Foundation, a volunteer leader for the Boy Scouts of America, and a board member of All Children’s Theater in Gainesville. He enjoyed food, rugby, soccer and sailing.
