Embracing the Yucatan: A Student’s Study Abroad Adventure
Aaron Roldan-Martinez, a previous participant in the Study Abroad trip to Mexico, shared his experiences from the program.
“The family I stayed with was incredibly welcoming and supportive throughout my time there,” he said, recounting how his host family provided everything from meals to guidance on local customs.
When asked about the cultural differences, Aaron highlighted the strong sense of community he encountered. Adapting to the local language came naturally for Aaron, who is Puerto Rican and spoke Spanish fluently.
“Communication was fairly smooth,” he said, though the packed schedule of activities and coursework proved to be a challenge. Despite these hurdles, Aaron found the overall experience deeply rewarding.
“Immersing myself in the history, culture and food of the Yucatan Peninsula was unforgettable,” he said. “It is one of the most fulfilling experiences I have ever had. Take the leap and get out of your comfort zone. Your outlook on life will change significantly.”
