Dr. Naima Brown, a Professor of Sociology in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, has been selected to receive the 2011 International Faculty Development Seminar (IFDS) Alumni Scholarship.
This travel scholarship is offered by CIEE, a non-profit, non-governmental organization whose mission is “to help people gain understanding, acquire knowledge, and develop skills for living in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world.”
Dr. Brown will use the scholarship funds, which have been matched by the Office of International Education at Santa Fe College, to travel to Jordan and explore the dynamic roles of women in contemporary Arab society.
CIEE offers two IFDS Alumni Awards each year. The recipients are U.S. faculty members who have attended at least one previous faculty seminar and who have successfully incorporated those seminar experiences into their classrooms or institutions at large. Brown attended faculty seminars in Senegal (2004) and Brazil (2005). Both seminars were instrumental in preparing Brown to create curriculum materials on marriages and families in Senegal and Brazil. In the same vein, the upcoming seminar will prepare her to create resources on marriages and families in Jordan.
