Saints win volleyball home opener in five-set thriller

For the second season in a row, the FCSAA #4/NJCAA #17 Santa Fe Saints started their season off on the right foot with a win over Pasco Hernando State College, and for the second year in a row the match went five sets. The two teams traded sets with SF winning the first, third and fifth, and the Conquistadors won sets two and four.

Sophomore Kaylin Powell led all Saints in scoring with 11 kills and four blocks, scoring 15 points as SF defeated the Conquistadors 25-22, 25-27, 25-12, 20-25 and 15-10. Santa Fe is now 1-0 in the young season as Pasco Hernando falls to 0-2. Also chipping in was freshman Nadine Williams with 14 points (10 kills and 4 blocks), and freshman Sheyanne Sullivan with nine points (8 kills and 1 block). Buchholz High School’s Kelly Collins led defensively with 29 digs.

“Our team showed a lot of fight tonight. I thought our middles were real good at closing blocks tonight. That was a big difference in the outcome,” said SF Coach Nick Cheronis.

The Saints will continue at home on Friday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. against Gulf Coast State College, and on Saturday at 9 a.m. against Eastern Florida State College, and 4 p.m. against the State College of Florida. Fans can watch the games live on NJCAA TV
