September 3, 2024 – Santa Fe College art professor Mario Mutis, was awarded the 2024 Matthew Quinn Prize by the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. This prestigious recognition highlights Mario’s outstanding contributions to the field of art and education. This latest honor is on top of his being named the 2022 Professor of the Year by the Association of Florida Colleges.
Professor Mutis, who has served the college since 2015, has masterfully adapted ancient techniques to modern contexts, and inspires and engages his students. He is also highly involved in the college’s Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence.
When Professor Mutis isn’t working with students, he stays busy with projects across many art mediums. Recently, he was recognized by SF President Paul Broadie in his High Five Friday message to the college community. Over the summer, he completed a summer residency at the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts in Maine; met with actress Diana Bermudez in London to discuss future collaboration on a film and cultural exchange; worked with Muysca communities in Cota, Colombia, teaching traditional metal casting techniques; co-led an SF study abroad program in the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico; and published an article, Reappearing Practices, in Studio Potter.
