Milton Now a Major Hurricane, Landfall Expected Wednesday Evening

Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) have reported that Hurricane Milton has gained strength and has become a major hurricane earlier this morning. As of the NHC’s 11 a.m. report, Hurricane Milton has sustained winds of 155 mph, putting it 2 mph short of Category 5 status, and is moving east-southeast at 9 mph.

Santa Fe College’s Emergency Management Team began meeting over the weekend, and are taking guidance from local, state and federal officials as the storm approaches. At this point, the college remains open for all standard academic and business operations, however students and employees are strongly encouraged to prepare for severe impacts from the storm which may include strong tropical storm force winds with hurricane force gusts and torrential downpours with rainfalls expected between 4-8 inches.

Should the college decide on closures, it will be posted on the SF Alerts page. Additionally, you will be contacted through any emergency contact information you have on file with the college. Students should go to eSantaFe and employees should go to Workday to verify their contact information.

The college will post the next update by 4 p.m. Monday, October 7.
