SAINTS FALL TO BREVARD, 61-59

Gainesville, FL -The Brevard College Titans fought back from a 13 point deficit to hand the FCCAA #7 Santa Fe Saints their second loss of the season on Wednesday night. SFC had trouble scoring against the pressure man-to-man defense of the Titans in the second half as BCC held them to eight points over the last 12 minutes of the game.

“This was a tough loss,” said Coach Chris Mowry. “I thought BCC played very hard and never gave up when we had a 13 point lead. We struggled to score down the stretch and a lot of that had to do with their defense.”

The Saints came out of the gates hot, taking a 14-8 lead on a three point shot by Branimir Mikulic at the 15:55 mark, SFC’s fourth three in the first four minutes.

Brevard hung tough and tied the score at 17-17 on a layup by Anthony Jackson and took their first lead on a free throw the next possession. The Saints closed the half on a 12-4 run and took a 33-30 lead into the break.

Santa Fe took the momentum from the end of the first half and carried it over to the second period, building a double digit lead, 43-32 at the 16:35 mark on a layup by Mike Washington (pictured).

Brevard refused to give in and starting at the 12 minute mark, began to slowly eat into the Saints lead.

“They chipped away at us in the second half,” said Mowry. “We had opportunities we didn’t capitalize on and Brevard made some key baskets and got some important second chance points. They deserved to win tonight.”

Brevard knotted things up at 55-55 with 1:40 to go, the first tie since 3:55 in the first half. One minute later, the Titans Ellis Young slammed down a missed shot to give BCC the lead. The Titans made four free throws down the stretch to ice the game.

BCC outrebounded the Saints 37-32 and had 17 offensive rebound to SFC’s 14 defensive boards.

“Brevard did a great job rebounding tonight,” said Mowry. “They were outhustling us and outworking us on the glass.”

Mike Washington and Altavious Carter led the Saints in scoring with 12 each and Chuck Ford and Iran Hollis each had 11.

The Saints next game is at Polk State College on Wednesday, November 25 at 5:00pm. SFC will return home on November 30 when they play TAAG Academy at 7:00pm
