SAINTS ROUT DAYTONA STATE, 23-11

Gainesville, FL – Two days after clinching the Mid-Florida Conference championship, the Santa Fe Saints showed why they were the best team in the MFC by handily beating Daytona State College 23-11 in seven innings.

SF fell behind 5-0 after the first inning, but a Jardian Thomas homerun in the second put the Saints on the board and the next inning four more runs on RBI singles by Austin Lawrence and Jeff Moyer and a two run homerun by Mike Miranda (12) tied the score.

Daytona State retook the lead, 9-5 in the top of the fourth on a two out grandslam by Tyler Orndorff.

The Saints wasted no time answering, putting eight runs on the board on seven hits and two DSC errors in the bottom of the fourth.  Corey Elasik singled and Bryce Johnston tripled for the first run.  Zach Floyd then singled and Austin Lawrence and TJ Spina hit back to back triples to knot the score at 9-9.  Jeff Moyer doubled home a run and scored two batters later on a Falcon error.  Corey Elasik came to the plate for the second time in the inning and doubled down the left field line to plate two more and make the score 13-9.

Santa Fe added to their lead in the sixth with three runs, one on a passed ball and the other two on an RBI single by Johnston and a DSC error.

SF ended the game in the seventh with seven runs, prompting a mercy rule.  Thomas started the scoring when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Nolan Malone walked to force in a run, Bryce Johnston singled home two and Zach Floyd put the finishing touches on the game with a walk-off three run homer.

Ricky Claudio (1-0) picked up the win in relief of starter Steven Ragans, his first of the season.

The Saints combined for 17 hits including eight by the seven, eight and nine hitters in the order (Elasik, Johnston, Floyd).  They also combined to knock in 10 of the Saints 23 runs.  Every Saint starter had at least one RBI and seven had at least one hit.

Johnston finished the game 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBI, Elasik was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, Floyd was 3-for-4 with a homerun and four RBI, Lawrence was 2-for-4 with two RBI, Moyer 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI, TJ Spina 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBI and Jardian Thomas was 2-for-3 with four runs scored and three RBI, including a HR.

Santa Fe wraps up their regular season on Friday at home against Central Florida CC at 3:00pm.
