SF WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

KING’S 14 POINTS, 10 REBOUNDS LEAD SAINTS PAST PALM BEACH 65-53

Gainesville, FL – Leandra King was dominant on both ends of the floor for the #7 Santa Fe Saints Saturday night in the Cabot Lodge Tip-Off Classic against Palm Beach State College, scoring 14 points to go with 10 rebounds and two blocked shots.

“Leandra played very well tonight,” said SF coach Chanda Stebbins. “Her 12 second half points were a huge boost. She shot the ball well, had some nice rebounds and played with a lot of energy.”

Stephenie Coney, 14 points and Kindsay Brandt, 13 points also scored in double figures for SF.

“Kindsay does a little bit of everything for us,” said Stebbins. “She not only scores but also does a very good job rebounding and finding open shooters on offense. Stephenie stepped her game up tonight. She was very aggressive with the ball and really forced the action against their match-up zone.”

The game was a story of two halves as Palm Beach (0-2) controlled the first half with solid defense and timely scoring. PB held the lead in the first half for all but 30 seconds, taking as large as an eight point lead at the 8:21 mark. Santa Fe (2-1) kept things close and closed the first period by outscoring the Panthers 13-9 to cut the Palm Beach lead to 32-29 at the break.

The roles were reversed in the second frame as the Saints held the Panthers to only 21 second half points on 9-of-23 shooting, outscoring them 36-21 and out rebounding them 27-13.

“We did a much better job rebounding in the second half,” Stebbins said. “We only had three offensive rebounds in the first half, but really made it a priority in the second half and we were able to come away with 15. That was a major difference in the game. Kristien [Malone] and Leandra did a really nice job on the glass.”

After a three pointer by PB to begin the second period, Santa Fe went on a 10-0 run, sparked by six Leandra King points, to take a 39-35 lead. The Saints didn’t look back from there and outscored the Panthers 26-18 over the remainder of the game to win their second straight game over a Southern Conference opponent.

The Saints travel to Marianna on November 12 and 13 for the Chipola College tournament where they face defending the defending National Champions and #1 team in the nation Gulf Coast CC on Friday at 6:00pm and #4 Tallahassee CC on Saturday at 2:00pm.

“I think we will have a good feel for where we stand in the state after the games next weekend,” said Stebbins. “Gulf Coast and TCC are two of the better teams we will face all season. We are going to have to limit our mistakes and play with a high level of intensity.”
