SAINTS GET BACK ON TRACK WITH WIN AGAINST FSC-J, 66-53

Gainesville, FL – Jerome Clyburn scored a season high 22 points to lead the SF Saints to a victory over Florida State College at Jacksonville on Wednesday night, improving their record to 17-8 overall and 4-3 in the Mid-Florida Conference.

“This was a nice win at home tonight, especially coming off a tough loss,” said SF Coach Chris Mowry. “We did a nice job rebounding on both ends and played good defense in both halves.”

The game’s first twelve minutes saw six lead changes and five ties before the Saints pulled away over the final eight of the first half, taking a 34-25 lead into the break. SF forward Branimir Mikulic sparked the rally, hitting two three point shots over the final two minutes.

Clyburn took over in the second half, scoring 17 of his 22 points to help pace the Saints. Josh Wiseman ended a Stars 7-0 run that cut the SF lead to 43-38 midway through the second period when he nailed a deep three pointer. Santa Fe didn’t look back from there and outscored FSC-J 23-15 over the game’s final 11 minutes to pick up the win.

The SF defense held the Stars to 37% shooting from the field and just 4.5% from the three point line (1-for-22). The Saints shot 47.7% (21-for-44) from the field and 61.3% (19-for-31) from the free throw line. They outrebounded the Stars 35-30 but committed 19 turnovers, the most thus far in the conference season.

“Offensively I thought we shot the ball well, but we weren’t as successful as we normally are from the free throw line,” said Mowry. “Our defense was solid but we were too sloppy with the ball tonight. I think that had to do with FSC-J’s defense and the fact that this was our fourth game in eight days. We played ragged on offense and it showed in the number of turnovers.”

The Saints will have a week off before returning to action on February 2 when they travel to Palatka to take on St. John’s River State College at 7:00pm. The Vikings defeated SF earlier this season in Gainesville, 69-66. The game can be watched live on www.psblive.com.
