SAINTS TAKE TWO FROM SOUTH FLORIDA, SWEEP SEASON SERIES

Box score 1, Box score 2

Gainesville, FL – Ben O’Shea and Alec Asher did their part on the pitching mound for Santa Fe on Saturday afternoon, leading the Saints to a pair of seven inning wins over South Florida CC, 9-7 and 5-1. The two wins give SF a season sweep over the Panthers whom they defeated in Avon Park on February 5, 11-0 and 23-4.

An eight run second inning in game one was plenty for O’Shea (3-0) to work with as he surrendered just two runs over five innings of work with six strikeouts. The bullpen ran into some trouble but Jarod Carlton nailed down the final out with the tying run at the plate to pick up his second save.

The Saints had eight hits on the day and also drew eight walks from Panther pitchers. Nathan Bandy finished 2-for-3 with a RBI, Zach Taylor was 2-for-3, Drew Doty was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI, Andrew Grifol was 1-for-2 with two RBI and TJ Spina finished 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

Alec Asher dominated game two, giving up just one run on two hits, all in the first inning. He pitched six innings total with five of them hitless and struck out seven.

The bats were quiet until the fifth inning when Spina knocked in the tying run with an RBI groundout. Santa Fe broke through in the sixth for four runs on just one hit. The first three runs scored on a pinch hit RBI single by Grifol, a RBI walk by Greenwell and a RBI fielder’s choice by Doty. The fourth run came on an attempted caught stealing of Doty by the SFCC catcher. The runner on third broke on the throw and Doty stayed in a rundown long enough for the run to come across.

Brendan O’Rourke pitched a scoreless seventh inning to nail down the SF win.

The Santa Fe batters combined for five hits in game two. Jay Laurienzo was 2-for-3 with a double, Doty finished 1-for-3 with a double, Andrew Grifol was 1-for-1 with a RBI and Austin Lawrence was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.

The Saints continue their busy weekend with a game at home tomorrow, February 12 at 1:00 PM against Gulf Coast CC and again at home on Monday, February 14 against Hillsborough CC at 3:00 PM.
