SAINTS SWEEP REND LAKE IN COME FROM BEHIND FASHION, 5-4 AND 6-4

Gainesville, FL – The NJCAA #23/FCCAA #2 Saints (13-3-1) collected two hard fought wins on Saturday afternoon, coming from behind twice to defeat Rend Lake College. The two wins completed a three game sweep of the Warriors.

RLC took an early 2-0 lead in the third inning of game one but SF answered right back, plating three in the bottom of the third on a three RBI double by Andrew Grifol.

The Warriors tied the game in the sixth of a seen inning game, sending it to extra frames. The Saints broke the 4-4 tie in the bottom of the ninth when they loaded the bases with one out and scored on a wild pitch to take game one 5-4.

Chris Lee started on the hill for Santa Fe and surrendered three unearned runs. Antwan Brown pitched the seventh and eighth innings allowing one run on three hits. Steven Ragans (1-0) pitched the ninth inning and picked up his first win of the season.

Drew Doty finished game one 3-for-3 with two runs scored, Andrew Grifol was 1-for-3 3 with a double and three RBI, TJ Spina was 1-for-2 and Tim Remes 1-for-3.

Rend Lake jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game number two aided by three SF errors in the third inning. The Saints cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third on RBI by Grifol and Cory Elasik.

Grifol brought the Saints even closer in the fifth when he led off with a single and eventually scored on a wild pitch to make the score 4-3.

Santa Fe completed the comeback in the sixth with three runs on two hits and a RLC error. Nathan Bandy reached on an error to start the inning and advanced to second on the throw. Drew Doty hit a sacrifice fly to move Bandy to third. The next batter Austin Lawrence walked and Bandy scored the tying run when the ball got away from the catcher.

Andrew Grifol knocked in the go ahead run two batters later for his fifth RBI of the day and his NJCAA leading 22nd of the season. Elasik added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly.

Jarrod Carlton (2-0) pitched six innings to earn the win, striking out four. Kentrail Pierce threw a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.

Grifol paced the offense going 3-for-4 with two RBI, Trey Griffin finished 2-for-4, Elasik was 1-for-4 with two RBI and Nathan Bandy was 2-for-4.

The Saints travel to Pasco Hernando CC on Monday, February 21 for a game against the Conquistadors at 3:00 PM.
