SANTA FE TAKES TWO AT TCC, SWEEP THREE GAME SERIES

Tallahassee, FL – The FCCAA #1 Santa Fe Saints (17-3-1) showed again why they’re the top ranked team in the state of Florida, dominating a double header at #9 Tallahassee CC, 7-2 and 16-10. SF used a 13 run seventh inning in game two to close out the three game weekend sweep. They outscored the Eagles 31-15 and out hit them 29-17.

Ben O’Shea (4-0) turned in a stellar performance on the mound in game one, surrendering just two runs on four hits in 6.1 innings with five strikeouts. Kentrail Pierce took over with one out in the seventh inning and closed the game with two quick outs.

SF opened the scoring in the first inning with three runs on three hits. After doubles by TJ Spina and Jay Laurienzo, Andrew Grifol singled them home for an early 2-0 lead. Tim Remes knocked in the other run with a sacrifice fly.

The Saints scored two more in the second on an RBI fielder’s choice by Jordan Turner and a TCC error and added another run in the third on a homerun by Cory Elasik.

Jay Laurienzo led the seventh inning off with his fifth homerun of the year to make the score 7-1. The Eagles managed one in the bottom of the seventh but it was too little too late as Pierce nailed down the final two outs for the Saints victory.

Cory Elasik finished game one 2-for-4 with a homerun, Jay Laurienzo was 2-for-4 with a homerun and Andrew Grifol was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI.

Game two started slow for the Santa Fe who were blanked through the first four innings. TCC scored one in the bottom of the fourth off of SF starter Alec Asher but the Saints answered with three in the top of the fifth. TJ Spina doubled home the first run, Nathan Bandy singled home Garrett Greenwell and Spina scored later in the inning on an error.

The lead was short lived as Tallahassee scored four in the sixth inning to take a 5-3 lead into the seventh, needing just three outs to salvage a win in the series. The Saints had other plans however as they exploded for 13 runs on six hits and seven TCC walks to snatch victory away from the Eagles.

The big blows in the inning came from Tim Remes who doubled home two runs and Jay Laurienzo who cleared the bases with a double for the final three runs of the frame.

TCC made things interesting by scoring five in the bottom of the seventh, but the rally fell short. Kyle Rowe picked up the win with one inning of relief.

Drew Doty finished 3-for-4 with an RBI, Jay Laurienzo was 1-for-4 with a double and four RBI, TJ Spina was 1-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored, Austin Lawrence was 1-for-3 with two RBI and Garrett Greenwell finished 1-for-2 with three runs scored.

With the non-conference portion of the schedule now behind them, Santa Fe opens up the defense of their 2010 Mid-Florida Conference title on the road at Daytona State College on Wednesday, March 2 at 3:00 PM.
