SAINTS ROUT FSC-J 10-4, CLINCH BERTH IN STATE TOURNAMENT
Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints used two three run blasts by Trey Griffin and Jay Laurienzo to roll past Florida State College at Jacksonville on Monday afternoon and in the process clinched their third straight FCSAA State Tournament berth. SF (33-6-1, 16-3 MFC) can wrap up their third straight Mid-Florida Conference championship with a loss by St. John’s River State on Wednesday, or by defeating SJRSC on Friday.
Alec Asher (4-0), scheduled to pitch just four innings, picked up the win by allowing one run on four hits with seven strikeouts.
The Saints opened the scoring up in the fourth with four runs on four hits. Andrew Grifol scored the first run on a balk, Austin Lawrence drove in two with a double and Jake Huxtable doubled in the fourth run.
In the third, Trey Griffin delivered a deep opposite field homerun (3) to right that nearly cleared the street behind the field, giving SF a 7-1 advantage.
Not to be outdone, Jay Laurienzo hit his tenth homerun of the season in the fourth over the scoreboard in left field to make the score 10-1.
FSC-J managed three runs on SF reliever Ryan Yarbrough in the sixth inning, but Chris Lee and Kyle Rowe combined to hold the Stars to just two hits over the final 3.1 innings to secure the win. Lee struck out five in his 2.1 innings of work.
