SAINTS DEFEAT SEMINOLE STATE COLLEGE 4-3, WIN THIRD STRAIGHT MFC TITLE

Sanford, FL – Malcolm Clapsaddle (11-1) continued his record breaking season on Saturday afternoon, pitching a complete game to lead the #1 FCSAA/#3 NJCAA Santa Fe Saints (34-7-1, 17-4 MFC) to their third straight Mid-Florida Conference title and a #1 seed at the FCSAA State Tournament.

“Our entire team has competed hard all season and deserve to be conference champs,” said SF coach Johnny Wiggs. “I’m really proud of every one of them and all of our coaches for their hard work.”

Clapsaddle struck out nine in the winning effort, allowing three runs while scattering seven hits. The 11 wins are a new SF record and the nine strikeouts gives him 98 on the year, also a new single season record.

“Clapsaddle was our horse again today,” said Wiggs. “Once we took the lead he buckled down and took over. He has had an unbelievable year and seems to just keep getting better.”

The Raiders actually struck first in the game, taking a 3-0 lead after three innings. Clapsaddle settled down from their and shut out SSC the rest of the way, allowing the Saints to get back in the game.

Santa Fe’s first two runs came in the fifth inning on a solo homerun by Zach Taylor and an RBI ground out by Drew Doty.

The Saints took the lead in the sixth on a Trey Griffin triple and a fielder’s choice RBI by TJ Spina, giving Clapsaddle all the run support he needed.

SF managed eight hits on the day with Trey Griffin the only player with two hits. He finished 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI.

The next game for Santa Fe is at home on Monday, April 18 against Lake Sumter CC at 3:00 PM.
