CURRY SPARKS TWO WALK OFF WINS OVER HILLSBOROUGH CC, 1-0 AND 3-2

Gainesville, FL – Sophomore catcher Ashley Curry made the most of her last games at Santa Fe Field, delivering a two out, two strike walk off hit in the bottom of the seventh in game one of a double header against Hillsborough CC and laid down a bunt that led to a Hawks error and the winning run in game two.

Both teams struggled to get anything going offensively in the first game until the seventh inning. NJCAA #9/FCSAA #4 Santa Fe (43-10, 20-4 MFC) loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and with two outs Curry stepped to the plate and delivered a line drive single to center field, scoring Colleen Leebove for the winning run.

SF pitcher Colena Lazar (30-7) allowed just one hit while striking out nine, bringing her 2011 total to 308, the first player in Santa Fe history to achieve 300 K’s in a single season.

Santa Fe fell behind 2-0 in game two but fought back to tie the score at 2-2 after Jaimee Vega tripled with two outs and later scored on a wild pitch.

With the Texas tiebreaker in effect in the eighth inning, pitcher Stephanie Cameron shut down HCC and gave the Saints a chance to win in the bottom of the inning. Lindsey Hamlin started for SF on second base and came around to score the winning run when the Hawks threw the ball down the right field line trying to throw Curry out after a sacrifice bunt attempt.

Cameron picked up the first win of her collegiate career in relief of starter Jasmine Warren.

The Saints head to Pensacola on April 29 – May 1 for the FCSAA State/NJCAA Region VIII Tournament at Exchange Park. In the first round of the double elimination tournament, Santa Fe plays Brevard Community College on Friday, April 29 at 2:00 PM CST. Win or lose, they play again at 7:00 PM CST.
