Pensacola, FL – Gia Tomossone’s 3-for-3 day sparked a 2-0 Santa Fe victory on Friday afternoon over Brevard CC in the first round of the FCSAA State/NJCAA Region VIII Tournament in Pensacola.

“Gia was clutch for us at the plate today,” said SF Coach Chris Ahern. “Colena kept us in the game and Gia was able to come through when we needed her.” The win advances SF into the second round of the winner’s bracket where they will face NJCAA #4/FCSAA #1 Indian River State at 7:00 PM CST (8:00 PM EST) tonight, April 29.

Colena Lazar (31-7) held Brevard in check all game long, striking out seven to pick up her 16th shutout of the season and 26th of her career. Her 31 wins are tops in the state.

The two Saint runs came in the fifth inning on a two out hit by Tomossone and a situation where both SF runners on second and third base were caught in run downs.

The runner at third scored before Tomossone was tagged out heading back to second base, giving Santa Fe the 2-0 advantage.

An inning earlier Bianca Torres came up with the defensive play of the day when she backed up an over throw from first to third in left field and gunned out the runner trying to score from third, preserving the 0-0 tie.

The Saints face off against Indian River State at 7:00 PM CST (8:00 PM EST) tonight and play tomorrow at either 12:00 PM or 2:00 PM CST depending on the outcome this evening against IRSC.
