CLAUDIO-RIVERA SET TO PARTICIPATE IN PAN AMERICAN GAMES WITH PUERTO RICO

Gainesville, FL – The opening ceremonies for the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico will take place Friday, October 14 and Santa Fe freshman fastpitch softball player Karla Claudio-Rivera will be there representing her home nation of Puerto Rico as a member of the national team.

Claudio-Rivera has previous experience on the national stage, having competed with the Puerto Rican Junior national team from 2009-2011, where she primarily played first base.  The Pan Am Games mark her first appearance with the adult national team.

Thousands of athletes from 42 countries, including 275 from the United States, will compete in 36 sports during the Pan Am Games.  This is the world’s second-largest sporting event after the Summer Olympics.

ESPN Deportes will provide unmatched, daily coverage of the 16th edition of the Pan American Games live from Guadalajara, Mexico Friday, October 14 – Sunday, October 30. Coverage of the Games will be featured on ESPN Deportes, ESPN3, ESPN Deportes Radio, ESPNdeportes.com and ESPN Deportes La Revista. In addition, ESPN2 will provide additional coverage in English.

“This is a tremendous honor and we are proud of the opportunity Karla has to represent her country, and the fact that Santa Fe has a student athlete who is being asked to participate in an international event of such a magnitude, with and against Olympic teams,” said SF Coach Chris Ahern.

Softball opens up play at the games on October 17.  The Puerto Rican National team schedule (all times CST):

10/17 v. Dominican Republic  9:00 AM

          v.  Canada  4:00 PM

10/18 v. Cuba  1:00 PM

10/19 v. United States  4:00 PM

10/20 v. Argentina  9:00 AM

10/21 v. Venezuela  1:00 PM

          v. Mexico  6:00 PM

The top four seeds following preliminary play will advance to the Medal Round starting on October 22, with the Gold Medal game taking place on October 23.
