Passings: SF Student Jared Shilling

Jared Shilling, 31, an aviation student at Santa Fe College, died Saturday in a small plane crash in Georgia. He was a passenger in a plane believed to have experienced mechanical issues.

Jared was a Marine who was honorably discharged as a sergeant after proudly serving his country for four years, including two tours of duty in Iraq. Jared lived in Branford.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Milam Funeral Home in Newberry, with a visitation from noon to 1:30 p.m. prior to the service.

Our hearts and thoughts are with his family and friends. Several members of Santa Fe’s Collegiate Veterans Society plan to attend Jared’s funeral.

Scholarship offered in Jared’s memory

Writes John Gebhardt, Veterans Advocate: “The student veterans will establish a perpetual scholarship in the name of Jared Willis Shilling. This scholarship will be awarded each year, forever. The students have $15,000 in commitments to fully fund this scholarship in memory of their academic and military service brother. Our condolences to the family as we also grieve.”
