SF MEN’S BASKETBALL

MOWRY SETS SF WINS MARK IN DEFEAT OF HILLSBOROUGH, 79-58

Tampa, FL – Four Santa Fe players scored in double figures as the FCSAA #4 Saints (6-1) defeated the Hillsborough CC Hawks for the second time in as many weeks. SF leading scorer Brian Holmes led the charge with 17 points.

The victory was a special one for SF Head Coach Mowry who moved ahead of FCSAA Hall of Famer Kenny Drost (163-154) as the all-time winningest head coach in Santa Fe College men’s basketball history with his 164th victory (164-80 overall record).

“This record is really a tribute to all the players, assistant coaches, and administrators I’ve had the pleasure of working with over these last eight plus seasons. They have made my job a whole lot easier and I thank them for everything they have done for myself and this program,” said Mowry.

“It is truly an honor to be mentioned along with a coach like Kenny Drost,” Mowry said. “He laid a foundation for Santa Fe basketball that continues to this day: playing with integrity, doing things the right way on the court and in the classroom, and representing the college in a positive manner at all times. Not only was he a great coach, but he was an even better man, and I’m incredibly honored to be a part of what he started here at Santa Fe.”

The game got off to a slow start for both teams and the score was knotted at 15-15 eight minutes into the game. From there it was all Saints. A 23-14 run over the final 12 minutes of the first period gave SF a 38-29 lead going into the half time break.

“Hillsborough played very hard in the first half and gave us quite a few different looks on defense,” said Mowry. “Our guys stayed patient and closed the half with a nice run.”

Santa Fe came out firing in the second half, building the lead to 20 early on. HCC fought back and closed the gap to 12, but would get no closer as the Saints pulled away down the stretch for the 21 point victory.

“This was a good win for our team coming off the loss at Polk State,” said Mowry. “We started a little slow, but did a nice job picking up the defensive pressure in the second half.”

A big factor in the game came at the free throw line where Santa Fe outscored Hillsborough 19-7.

Three players joined Holmes in double figures for SF. Keshaun Hamiton netted 15, Kevin Harden scored 13 and Altavious Carter had 11.

The Saints travel to Marianna on Friday, December 2 and Saturday, December 3 to take part in the Panhandle Shootout at Chipola College. Friday’s game will matchup SF against Tallahassee CC at 3:00 PM CST and on Saturday they will face off against Gulf Coast State College at 1:00 PM CST.
