SF MEN’S BASKETBALL

WISEMAN AND STONE LEAD SAINTS PAST EAST GEORGIA, 67-65

Gainesville, FL – Josh Wiseman’s 19 point effort sparked the FCSAA #4 Santa Fe Saints (10-1) on Saturday night in the Florida College Shootout against East Georgia College and Paul Stone (pictured) put the finishing touches on the win with an off balance layup with 1.8 seconds left to give SF their tenth win of the season.

“This was a difficult game for us today,” said SF Coach Chris Mowry. “East Georgia played very well and with their three and four guard looks we had trouble covering them at times. They shot the three very well and we were slow to close out, giving them some good looks that they knocked down.”

East Georgia (7-3) used ten three pointers and 12 offensive rebounds to stay in the game and despite shooting just 38% from the field, held a late lead over the Saints 64-63 with 29 seconds to play. On the ensuing SF possession Josh Wiseman took the ball down the right side and finished a tough layup, putting the Saints up 65-64.

The Bobcats had a chance to take the lead with 15 seconds to go, but EGC guard Don Quarles made just one of two free throws, leaving the score knotted at 65-65.

Paul Stone took matters into his own hands over the final seconds and drove to the hoop, banking an off balance five foot shot in with 1.8 seconds remaining to give the Saints the 67-65 lead. A desperation heave at the buzzer fell short for East Georgia.

Josh Wiseman led all scorers with 19 points and was 8-for-10 from the field, Altavious Carter finished with 10 points Paul Stone scored nine points and pulled down a team high seven rebounds, and Johnathan Williams had six points off the bench.

“Josh really helped us out tonight and got us going in the first half,” said Mowry. Altavious had a solid all-around game and was especially good on the defensive end. Paul and Johnathan did a great job off the bench and gave us quality minutes and made big shots.”

The Saints continue in the Florida College Shootout on Sunday, December 11 against St. Petersburg College at 3:00 PM. A full shootout schedule can be found on the Santa Fe Athletics home page.

“St. Pete is going to provide a good test for us tomorrow,” said Mowry. “They get up and down the floor and play good defense. We will need to play better if we want to get a win.”
