ST. PETE PULLS OUT WIN OVER SANTA FE, 62-58

Gainesville, FL – The St. Petersburg College Titans squeaked out a tight win over the FCSAA #4 Santa Fe Saints (10-2) on Sunday at the Florida College Shootout, holding off a late surge by SF in the process.

“St. Pete played very well and made some clutch shots,” said SF Coach Chris Mowry. “We didn’t play well enough to win and didn’t come up with enough big plays.”

The first half was back and forth with each team leading four times and a total of five ties. Two Altavious Carter free throws with seven seconds left in the first period knotted the score 29-29 at the half.

The Titans (7-6) controlled things early in the second half, opening things up with an 8-1 run over the first three minutes to take a 37-30 lead.

Santa Fe chipped away and tied the score on a three pointer by Carter to even the score at 46-46. Thirty seconds later Paul Stone drove to the hoop and put SF ahead for the first time in the second half, 48-46.

Kenny Bellinger answered right back for St. Pete to tie the game up for the seventh time. The Saints’ AJ Roberts broke the tie with a three pointer from the wing, putting SF back up 51-48.

St. Pete controlled the action the rest of the way and outscored the saints 14-7 over the final seven minutes to pick up the win.

Altavious Carter was the only Saint in double figures with 11 points, Brian Holmes had nine, Junior McLeod scored eight to go with eight rebounds and Paul Stone finished with eight points.

The Saints travel to Winter Haven on December 17 and 18 for the Polk Classic where they face off against Chipola College on Saturday at 3:00 PM and the Tampa Swish on Sunday at 3:00 PM.
