SAINTS FALL IN THE FINAL MINUTE TO FSC-J, 77-72

Jacksonville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints (7-18, 1-6 MFC) gave a valiant effort against Florida State College-Jacksonville on Wednesday night, but a late rally by the Stars over the final minute of the game gave SF their sixth straight loss.

FSC-J led 34-31 at the halftime break but SF rallied in the second half and led for a majority of the final 20 minutes. The Stars hung around and some key late buckets erased the Santa Fe lead.

The Saints trailed by three with eight seconds to go and a three point attempt by Tiara Thompson went in and out. FSC-J secured the rebound and made the two ensuing free throws to ice the game.

Stephenie Coney led Santa Fe with 16 points and three assists, Stephanie Edwards scored 14, Lonna Turner had 10 and Tiara Thompson 11 points and seven rebounds.

“The result wasn’t what we were looking for but we got a lot better tonight,” said SF coach Chanda Stebbins. “Hopefully we can build on this effort and get a win next Wednesday.”

The Saints host Hillsborough CC on Wednesday, February 8 at 6:00 PM. The men follow against St. John’s River State at 8:00 PM.
