SF WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

SAINTS FALL JUST SHORT AGAINST HILLSBOROUGH, 50-47

Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints (7-19, 1-7 MFC) led the Hillsborough CC Hawks at halftime 24-22, but couldn’t hold on down the stretch, falling 50-47 for their seventh straight loss.

Neither the Saints nor the Hawks could get much going offensively as both teams shot under 30% for the game. The difference in the game came at the free throw line where HCC outscored Santa Fe 13-2.

“We stayed with one of the best teams in the conference tonight, but just couldn’t close,” said SF coach Chanda Stebbins. “I thought we played hard and it’s frustrating to get so close and not pull it out.”

The Saints led by as many as nine points in the first half, but the Hawks closed the gap over the final seven minutes and cut the deficit to 24-22 at the break.

HCC controlled things out of the gate in the second half and built a 41-31 lead with seven minutes to go. The Saints fought back with a 9-0 run, cutting the margin to 41-40. SF then went cold, scoring just three points over the next four minutes. HCC made their free throws down the stretch to hold on for the three point win.

Miracle Watts led the way for SF with 11 points, Stephanie Coney had eight and Tiara Thompson scored nine. Stephanie Edwards pulled down 11 rebounds.

“I was proud of the effort Miracle gave us tonight on both ends of the court,” said Stebbins. “Stephanie [Edwards] shot wasn’t falling but she did a good job getting to the glass for us.”

The Saints will travel to Ocala on Saturday, February 11 for a game against College of Central Florida at 6:00 PM. The men will follow at 8:00 PM. Both games can be watched live on www.psblive.com.
