EDWARDS AND CONEY LEAD SAINTS PAST FSC-J IN THEIR FINAL HOME GAME
Gainesville, FL – Sophomores Stephanie Edwards and Stephenie Coney were outstanding on Saturday afternoon against Florida State College-Jacksonville, leading the Saints to a convincing 70-53 victory over the Stars in the duos last home game together. The two have been playing together since their high school days at Miami Norland.
The win snaps a nine game losing streak for the Saints (8-21, 2-9 MFC).
Santa Fe led from the outset jumping ahead 20-10 at the 11:37 mark on the strength of back to back jumpers by Edwards and a three pointer by Coney. The Saints continued to stretch the lead and had as much as a 17 point advantage in the first half before the Stars rallied to cut the deficit to 37-26 at the break.
Alexis Fitts nailed a three pointer to start the second half and three minutes later Edwards took over and put the game out of reach when she scored 10 points over a three and a half minute stretch to make the score 54-34. Coney and Tiara Thompson added three pointers to give SF their largest lead of the day 60-34, capping a 16-0 run.
The Stars would get no closer than 14 the rest of the way as the Saints cruised to the 70-53 victory.
Coney led SF with 17 points, Edwards scored 16, Alexis Fitts had nine, Taybreanna Couch scored eight points and had a team high 11 rebounds and the Saints other sophomore Cassandra Brown had six points and eight rebounds.
“I was happy for our sophomores and how well they played today,” said SF coach Chanda Stebbins. “Coney was very aggressive in attacking the basket and Edwards sparked her offense with how hard she was playing on defense. I liked what I saw out of Cassie [Brown] today. She pulled down some tough rebounds and made some key shots inside. This was an overall great team effort.”
Santa Fe wraps up their season on Saturday, February 25 at Hillsborough CC. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
