HARDEN’S DOUBLE DOUBLE LEADS SAINTS PAST FSC-J, 83-74

Gainesville, FL – Kevin Harden scored 13 points and pulled down 12 boards on Saturday afternoon, lead the Saints to their third victory this season again Florida State College-Jacksonville.  Four other Santa Fe players scored in double figures to help keep SF in the hunt for the Mid-Florida Conference championship.

The Saints (24-4, 9-2 MFC) remain a half-game ahead of College of Central Florida (21-7, 8-2 MFC) with one game to play.  CCF still has two games remaining and the tie breaker over SF.

“This was a good win for us in our last home game,” said SF coach Chris Mowry.  “We were a little shorthanded but our guys really played hard and gutted this one out.”

The game was close throughout the first 20 minutes but a late surge by the Saints put them ahead 41-35 at halftime.  Matt Conway played a key role in the first half, scoring eight points, including two three pointers to help stretch the lead.

The Saints used a 10-2 run 10 minutes into the second period to push the lead out to double digits for the first time, 60-49, on the strength of eight points by Conway.

Marko Djekovic made two free throws following a technical on FSC-J at the 10 minute mark to give SF their largest lead of the game 62-50.

FSC-J would get within seven at the two minute mark but a 7-0 run by the Saints put the game away.

Conway led SF with 15 points, Paul Stone had 14 and Harden, Djekovic and Holmes had 13 each.  Holmes was 3-for-3 from the three point line.

“We have a week off until our next game, which is something we can really use,” said Mowry.  “We control our own destiny as far as the state playoffs are concerned and we will prepare this week and head down to Palatka next Saturday and give it our best shot.”

The Saints travel to St. John’s River State College on Saturday, February 25 for their final regular season game of the season.  Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
