SAINTS FALL TO DAYTONA STATE, 6-5
Daytona, FL – Needing a win to stay in the State Tournament picture, the Daytona State College Falcons pulled out a tight 6-5 victory over first place Santa Fe in a must win situation. Despite the loss, the Saints (32-10, 14-4 MFC) maintain a three game lead in the MFC over College of Central Florida who fell to St. John’s Monday afternoon.
Sophomore Ryan Yarbrough started on the hill for SF and gave up four runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings. Josh Larson threw 1.2 innings, surrendering two runs to take the loss.
The Saints took an early 1-0 lead on a two out single by Caleb Denmark, scoring Mallex Smith. The Falcons answered with three in the first on two hits and two errors and one in the second on two hits.
Santa Fe tallied three in the third to tie the game at 4-4. Smith started the rally with a double, Shane Kennedy, Drew Doty and Caleb Denmark all walked for the first run and Trey Griffin knocked in the second on a fielder’s choice. The third run of the inning came on a Daytona error, scoring Doty.
Daytona’s Scooter Price broke the tie in the sixth with a homerun off Larson to move DSC ahead 6-4.
AJ Mazzurco kept the Saints in it with a two out RBI single in the eighth. In the ninth Santa Fe put runners on second and third with one out, but a strikeout by Denmark and a fly out by Griffin ended the threat and the game.
Mallex Smith finished 2-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base, Mazzurco was 2-for-3 with a run and Denmark was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
The Saints continue their four game road trip on Wednesday when they travel to Florida State College-Jacksonville for a 3:00 PM Mid-Florida Conference game.
