AJ Mazzurco and Garrett Greenwell led a powerful Santa Fe offense Monday afternoon against Seminole, driving in five of the Saints eight runs in the 8-4 victory over the Raiders.
Mazzurco started the scoring in the first inning with a two out double and two batters later Greenwell cleared the bases again to give SF (34-11, 16-5 MFC) an early 4-0 advantage.
Mallex Smith created the offense in the second when he reached on a walk, stole second, advanced to third on a ball in the dirt and scored on a Jacob Tillotson groundout.
Seminole scored two in the fourth to cut the lead to 5-2 but Santa Fe answered in the fifth with a run on a sacrifice fly by Trey Griffin and two more in the seventh on singles by Greenwell and Tim Remes to push the margin to 8-2.
The Raiders scored two in the eighth but would get no closer as Santa Fe closer Caleb Denmark shut the door in a non-save situation in the ninth, striking out two of three batters.
Felix Roque (2-1, 3.16 ERA) started on the hill and picked up the win, pitching five innings, surrendering two runs. Josh Larson pitched the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, striking out four and Denmark finished off the game in the ninth.
Mazzurco finished the game 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, Greenwell was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI and Trey Griffin was 1-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored.
The Saints travel to Lake Sumter on Wednesday, April 18 for a game at 3:00 PM and return home on Friday to face the College of Central Florida at 3:00 PM. Santa Fe holds a two game lead over the CF Patriots (29-16, 14-7 MFC) in the race for the MFC title with three games to play.
