SF BASEBALL – April 18, 2012
Leesburg, FL – Graham Ramos and the high powered Santa Fe offense took an early lead on Wednesday afternoon against Lake Sumter and never looked back, defeating the Lakers 8-3 in Leesburg. The win keeps the Saints (35-11, 17-5 MFC) two games ahead of College of Central Florida in the MFC standings with two games to go. The two teams meet on Friday in Gainesville.
Ryan Yarbrough (7-1, 2.01 ERA) started on the mound and pitched five innings, surrendering two unearned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. JT Simpson tossed 1.2 innings in relief with three strikeouts and one earned run, Lawrence Pardo struck out four over 1.1 innings, allowing one run, and Caleb Denmark finished off the final inning striking out a batter in a non-save situation.
AJ Mazzurco started the second innings for SF with a triple down the right field line, igniting a four run, four hit frame to give the Saints an early 4-0 lead.
The Lakers scored one in the third to cut the margin to 4-1 but the Saints came back in the sixth and put two runs on the board. Graham Ramos knocked home Trey Griffin who had double to start the inning for the first run and then scored on a steal of home to put Santa Fe ahead 6-1.
In the eighth the Saints added an insurance run on a Tim Remes sacrifice fly and one more for good measure in the ninth on an RBI single by Drew Doty, scoring Mallex Smith for the final run of the game.
Smith finished the afternoon 3-for-5 with two runs scored, a triple, a RBI and a stolen base, Graham Ramos was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases, Griffin nailed two doubles in a 2-for-4 effort, Drew Doty was 2-for-4 with a RBI and Jacob Tillotson also finished 2-for-4 with a stolen base. In all the SF offense pounded out 15 hits, five of them for extra bases.
The Saints return home on Friday to face off against the College of Central Florida at 3:00 PM. A win would clinch a fourth straight Mid-Florida Conference championship for Santa Fe.
