SF Baseball: Saints Defeat St. John’s 5-4 in Scheduled 12-inning Game

SAINTS DEFEAT ST. JOHN’S 5-4 IN SCHEDULED 12 INNING GAME

Gainesville, FL – The 2012-13 version of the Santa Fe Saints baseball team opened their fall scrimmage season with a 5-4 victory over Mid-Florida Conference rivals St. John’s River State College in a scheduled 12 inning contest Wednesday afternoon at Santa Fe Field.

Eleven different Santa Fe pitchers combined to strikeout 16 Viking batters while walking only four.  The Saints managed only six hits, but took advantage of eight walks and some good situational hitting to pull out the first game of the fall 5-4

Freshman Jonathan Camp (Ft. Meade) had a big two RBI double in the ninth to stretch the SF lead to 5-1.  St. John’s rallied for three runs in the 12th innings but the Saints hung on for the win.

“We liked what we saw from our guys today,” said SF coach Johnny Wiggs.  “They did a nice job in their first game and hopefully we can build on this and continue to improve throughout the fall.”

The Saints host All-American Prospects on Saturday for a double header scheduled to start at 12 noon.
