SF WOMEN’S BASKETBALL – 11/30/2012
Gainesville, FL – Unselfish offensive play and a stingy defense paced the Santa Fe Saints to a double digit win over Indian River Friday night in the Women’s Florida College Shootout. Lonna Turner led the way with her slick passing, dishing out six of the Saints 17 assists in the 66-54 victory. The win came despite just four SF points over the final 9:43 of the game.
“This was a good win for our team,” said SF Coach Chanda Stebbins. “We played great defense and shared the ball very well. I liked the way we fought through some adversity over the final ten minutes when we weren’t making shots. Instead of getting down we fought harder on defense. As a coach that is a nice thing to see.”
Santa Fe held the Pioneers to just 35% shooting from the field and just 10% from beyond the three point line. The Saints outrebounded IRSC 52-34.
“We did a nice job hitting the glass tonight,” said Stebbins. “A big part of our success was holding them to just one shot opportunity per possession.”
Tiara Thompson led the Saints with 12 points and seven rebounds, Paulina Zaveckaite had eight points and 11 rebounds and Lonna Turner scored nine points to go with six rebounds, six assists and four steals.
Santa Fe continues at home on Saturday, December 1 in the Florida College Shootout against Brevard College at 6:00 PM. This will be the third meeting between the two teams this season with Santa Fe taking the first two.
