SF WOMEN’S BASKETBALL – 2/16/2013

Gainesville, FL – The Central Florida Patriots won their first road game of the season Saturday afternoon against the Santa Fe Saints, pulling out a 72-68 Mid-Florida Conference victory at the SF Gym.  Despite the loss, the Saints clinched a spot in the FCSAA Tournament when Daytona State forfeited their game to Hillsborough CC earlier in the day.

Sarah Hunter led the charge for the Patriots, scoring 26 points to go with seven assists.  Monique Bunk kept Santa Fe in it with 21 points and 10 assists but Hunter was too much down the stretch.

The Saints led in the early going, taking a 10-4 lead five minutes into the game on the strength of eight points from Bunk.  CF bounced right back and outscored Santa Fe 23-6 over the next 10 minutes and took their largest lead of the game 27-16 with 4:55 left in the first half.  SF scored eight straight to cut the margin to three but a run by the Patriots and a buzzer beater by Katura Harrison gave CF a 35-28 halftime lead.

Santa Fe battled back in the second half to grab a six point lead with 11:19 to go.  Central Florida fought back to tie the score and the two teams traded the lead for the next 10 minutes.  A layup by Raquitta Gooden with 41 seconds remaining tied the score for the tenth time at 65-65.

On the ensuing possession Hunter put CF up 67-65 with an acrobatic shot in the lane.  Down two with the ball, the Saints turned it over and were forced to foul.  The Patriots made their free throws over the final 20 seconds to secure the win.

Paulina Zaveckaite finished the game for Santa Fe with 15 points and 17 rebounds and Raquitta Gooden had 14 points and six rebounds.

The final regular season game of the season for Santa Fe is Saturday, February 23 at Hillsborough CC at 4:00 PM.
