Gainesville, FL – Santa Fe staked itself to a 7-2 lead on Monday afternoon against Lake Sumter State College but an offensive explosion by the Lakehawks proved to be just enough as they slipped by the Saints 13-12.  LSSC improves their record to 17-8 overall and a league best 4-0 in the Mid-Florida Conference.  The Saints are now 15-9 and drop to 1-3 in conference play

JT Simpson started on the hill for SF and pitched well until a rough fourth inning chased him from the game.  The Saints defense didn’t do him any favors, committing four errors.

Lake Sumter jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on the strength of two Santa Fe errors.  The Saints bounced back for two in the bottom of the first on a two out, two RBI single by Jonathan Camp and five more in the second powered by a bases clearing three RBI triple by Jarred Mederos.

The Lakehawks didn’t give in and fought all the way back in the fourth, scoring six runs on seven hits and one SF error.  They plated three more in the fifth to build an 11-7 lead.

The Saints answered in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three on another RBI triple by Mederos and a RBI groundout by Caleb Denmark.

LSSC scored two more in the fifth and Santa Fe put two on the board in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Mederos, his sixth RBI, and a single by Denmark, to trim the lead back to one.

Santa Fe put a runner on second in the ninth with one out but couldn’t come up with the game tying hit.

The two teams combined for 25 runs, 15 walks and 33 hits, 13 of the hits coming from SF.  Mederos was 2-for-4 with two triples, six RBI, two walks and three runs scored.  Jonathan Camp was 3-for-6 with two RBI, Caleb Denmark was 2-for-3 with three walks and two RBI, Colby Lusignan was 2-for-5 with a RBI and Casey Scoggins finished 2-for-4 with two runs.

The Saints travel to Lake Sumter on Wednesday, March 13 for a game against the Lakehawks at 3:00 PM and finish their three game series on Friday, March 15 in Gainesville at 3:00 PM.
