Civic Engagement Opportunities Abound

There are many opportunities for civic engagement coming up in September.

LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS LUNCH
9/17/2013 (Tuesday), 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.

The League of Women Voters is a very active and influential non-partisan group in Alachua County dedicated to improving government and engaging citizens in the political processes that impact our lives.  The League will host featured guest pilot, publisher, Harvard graduate and former U.S. Congresswoman Pat Schroeder.  The first woman to serve on the House Armed Services Committee, and prime mover behind the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, Schroeder was the first woman elected to Congress in Colorado, and was re-elected eleven more times, ultimately serving 24 years as a U.S. Representative.  Students interested in attending this luncheon should contact Kimberly Buchholz, Office of Civic Engagement & Service, S137, at kimberly.buchholz@sfcollege.edu.


VOTER REGISTRATION DAY 2013

National Voter Registration Day is a non-partisan effort designed to encourage U.S. citizens from across the country to register to vote close enough to election day to be relevant yet far enough in advance to allow for deadlines which vary state to state.  Alachua County residents can verify registration status or register to vote at www.votealachua.com. Residents of Bradford County can verify registration status or register to vote at www.bradfordelections.com.

 

VOLUNTEER FAIR

Interested in meeting local agencies to learn about volunteer and internship opportunities? Stop by R01to meet with 30+ agency representatives from Gainesville area agencies.

 

AMERICORP SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION SESSION & VOLUNTEER FAIR

9/12/2013 (Thursday), 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., S29/30
Learn about the Florida Campus Compact | College Access & Success and City Year – Jacksonville AmeriCorp Scholarship programs lead by SF College site administrators, Kimberly Buchholz and Aminah Nichols, and City Year representative Jacqui Cheney.  Also featured will be representatives from area agencies offering College Access & Success program-qualifying volunteer opportunities serving youth in grades 6-12 and first-generation college students.

 

VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE (VITA) PROGRAM

9/12/13 (Thursday), 2-3 p.m., S29 & Ongoing

VITA is an IRS program designed to offer low- and moderate-income taxpayers assistance completing their annual tax returns at no cost.  VITA is a great way to build resumes, add leadership skills and  boost skillsets while serving the community.  Students from all academic disciplines are welcome and encouraged to participate.  Training and support provided by the IRS and United Way of North Central Florida.  The VITA@SF College program is seeking a Recruitment & Publicity Specialist.  Applications are available at the S Building Front Desk.  For more information, contact Scott Cutshall, VITA Program @ SF Coordinator, at VITA@SFCollege.edu.

 

DAY OF SERVICE

9/28/2013 (Saturday), 8 a.m. to Noon.
Work alongside UF students and community members serving Gainesville agencies and organizations at Day of Service. Check in at 8 a.m. then carpool in your own vehicle with your team to the designated service site for the morning.  Reflection and lunch (included) begins at 11 a.m. Workers, Team Leaders and Reflection Leaders needed!
