Gainesville, FL – Coach Johnny Wiggs and the Santa Fe Saints open the fall scrimmage season on Sunday, September 15 against the Gainesville Naturals at 12:00 PM.  The 2013-14 version of the Saints has a lot of new faces as well as some familiar ones.

“It’s exciting to be starting a new year with a great group of young men,” said Coach Wiggs.  “I really like our mix of returning players and new guys.  They are already working hard to get in the best shape possible and learn how to do things the Santa Fe way.”

SF returns nine players from last year’s squad, including Mid-Florida Conference Player of the Year Casey Scoggins.  The other returners include: LHP Kevin Martin, LHP Luke Helms, RHP Jose Batatino, infielder Colby Lusignan, OF Andrew Fears, 1B/OF Jonathan Camp, RHP Derek Vail, and C Evan Leyva.  Second baseman Jared Shouppe was lost for the season after just a few games last season and returns with two years of eligibility.  Lee Dunnam also received a medical exemption and will return for his sophomore season.  AJ Mazzurco, a member of the 2011-12 team returns for his sophomore season after sitting out the entire 2012-13 season with an injury.  Brady Price and Nick DiBartolomeo return to the team after sitting out all of last season with injuries and will have two years of eligibility.

The Saints welcome 14 new faces headlined by University of Georgia transfer infielder Payson Smith and University of Miami transfer catcher Roger Gonzalez.

Santa Fe will play eight dates in the fall with two of them coming against MFC rivals St. John’s River State College and the rest against travel ball teams.

Coach Wiggs expects a lot of competition amongst the players this fall as they each work towards a spot on the spring regular season roster.

“It will be a very competitive fall as guys fight for jobs in the spring.  I believe we have the talent to compete for a MFC Championship but we will need to stay healthy, something we didn’t do last season.”
