Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints played one of their most complete games of the season on Saturday afternoon, but couldn’t close out the final few minutes against a tough Florida State College-Jacksonville team.  The Blue Wave scored the final six points of the game over the final 1:53 to pull out the 75-74 win.  The game was the first Mid-Florida Conference contest for both teams.  The Saints are now 5-11 overall and 0-1 in MFC play.  FSC-J is 11-5 and 1-0.

The game was back and forth over the first four minutes before the Blue Wave took control and built an eight point lead with six minutes left in the first period.  The Saints answered and came storming back to outscore FSC-J by 11 over the final six minutes and took a 34-31 lead in to the locker room.

Santa Fe maintained their advantage in the second half until the 4:41 mark when the Blue Wave took a 64-63 lead on a free throw by Tierra Johnson.  Tori Baggett answered right back for SF, nailing a three pointer to put the Saints back up by two.

SF built the lead to 74-69 with 1:53 left but FSC-J scored the final six points including an up and under layup by Johnson with four seconds left to steal a conference victory from the Saints.

“I thought we did a pretty nice job but we have to be able to close games out,” said SF Coach Chanda Stebbins.  “That’s a game we had control of and we allowed them back in it at the end.”

Six players scored in double figures for the Saints.  Jocelyn Mousty led the way with 15 points and six rebounds, Jaquasha Seler had 14 points and four assists, Desi’Rai Shaw had 12, Tori Baggett scored 11, Stephanie Ball had 11 points and six assists, and Areana Davis scored 11 points to go with nine rebounds.

The Saints head out on the road on Wednesday, January 8 for a MFC match-up against the College of Central Florida at 5:30 PM.
