The Santa Fe athletics department has officially named the inductees for the 2014 Hall of Fame Class, with the enshrinement set to take place on Saturday, March 29 at 11 a.m. at the baseball and softball complex. The baseball and fastpitch teams will both have games following the ceremony at 2 p.m.
Mike Holloway (Track and Field, 1978-79), Katelyn Murphree (Fastpitch softball, 2007-2008), Ernest Milian (Baseball 1984-85), Stan Mitchell (Athletic Director, 1969-89), Steffi Sorensen (Women’s basketball, 2007-2008), and Tommy Edwards (Baseball, 1985-86), along with the 2008 fastpitch team comprise the 2014 class.
Current University of Florida track coach Mike Holloway headlines the impressive list of athletes in the third athletics Hall of Fame Class. Holloway competed for Santa Fe in 1978 and 1979, finishing as the NJCAA runner up in the 60 yard hurdles. He returned to SF and received his AA degree in 1993. He then went on to the University of Florida where he received his BA.
Holloway is the current Track and Field coach at the University of Florida, a position he has held for 12 years (19 total years at UF). In 2010, 2011 and 2012 he was named the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Men’s Indoor Head Coach of the Year and in he was named the 2012 and 2013 U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Men’s Outdoor Head Coach of the Year.
Katelyn Murphree, a member of the 2008 fastpitch team, was voted into the Hall of Fame in her first year of eligibility after a stellar two year career at Santa Fe. Her sophomore season in 2008 was one of the greatest in school history, one that saw her win a record 36 games, with a record low 0.88 ERA. She led the Saints to their first ever FCSAA State Championship and a National Championship game appearance, where they finished as runners-up. For her efforts, she was named First Team NJCAA All-American, First Team All FCSAA, FCSAA Pitcher of the Year, Mid-Florida Conference Pitcher of the Year, and NFCA All-South Region.
After graduating from Santa Fe, Murphree went on to star at Marshall University where she was the number one pitcher for the Herd her junior and senior seasons. She earned her BA from Marshall and currently lives in West Virginia.
Ernest Milian, a member of the 1985 State Championship baseball team, joins the Hall of Fame after an incredible two year pitching career at Santa Fe. His 14 career wins still ranked him #2 in SF history, and his 183 innings pitched is tops in school history. He finished with a 2.95 ERA and 86 strikeouts. He pitched for Valdosta State University in 1986 and finished up his degree at the University of Florida. He is currently the Director of Operations for Alachua Restaurant Group.
Stan Mitchell enters the Hall of Fame based on his more than 20 years at Santa Fe College as the school’s first Athletics Director. He started the program in 1969 and saw it rise to national prominence during his tenure. The women’s basketball team had its spectacular run during the 1980’s, including State Championships in 1981-82 and 1983-84, and the baseball team won the 1985 State Championship during his tenure.
Former Santa Fe women’s basketball star Steffi Sorensen played just one year for the Saints, but made a huge impact, scoring with 14 points per game, 6.8 rebounds per game and 4.8 assists. For her efforts she was named First Team Mid-Florida Conference.
After completely her sophomore season at SF, she walked on at the University of Florida where she started for the Gators her junior and senior seasons and earned a scholarship her senior year. As a senior, she was named team captain and team MVP at the conclusion of the season. After graduation, she played professional basketball in France for one season. She currently works for ESPN as a sideline reporter and color commentator for college sports.
Another member of the 1985 baseball team, Tommy Edwards, will be inducted in 2014. Edwards was the 1985 Mid-Florida Conference Player of the Year, First Team all MFC, and First Team All-State as the shortstop for the State Championship winning Saints.
For his career, Edwards hit. 375 and ranked fourth in career RBI, fourth in career doubles, and seventh in runs scored. He moved on to a successful career at the University of Florida where he was a member of their first World Series team in 1988, along with current SF Coach Johnny Wiggs.
Edwards is currently the head coach at Bishop Kenny High School in Jacksonville, FL.
The 2008 fastpitch team rounds out the 2014 Hall of Fame class. Coach Chris Ahern and the Saints completed the year with a 62-5-1 record, outscoring their opponents an incredible 461-100 while hitting a school record 50 homeruns. They recorded many program firsts including FCSAA State Champions, NJCAA Atlantic District Champions, and NJCAA National Runners-up. On the team were FCSAA State Player of the Year Brittany Cannon, two first team All-Americans in Cannon and Katie Murphree, and FCSAA State Coach of the Year Chris Ahern. They hit .350 as a team, held opponents to a .205 batting average.
