Gainesville, FL – The Mid-Florida Conference champion Santa Fe Saints (34-21, 19-5 MFC) are headed to the NJCAA Region VIII/FCSAA State Tournament in Pensacola on May 3-5 where they will begin their 2013 NJCAA Atlantic District title defense against Lake Sumter State College. The Saints and Lakehawks matchup on Saturday, May 3 at 12:00 PM CST in round one action (all tournament action has been pushed back a day due to weather in Pensacola). Regardless of the outcome, SF will play a second game later that night at 5:00 PM CST. Watch every game at www.psblive.com
The Saints first round match-up with Lake Sumter will be the team’s fifth meeting this season. Santa Fe won three out of four, including the final two.
Santa Fe enters the tournament hitting .291 as a team and are holding their opponents to just a .214 average. First Team All-State selection, and Mid-Florida Conference Pitcher of the Year Maddy Peres leads the way in the circle with a 15-8 record, 1.34 ERA and 157 strikeouts in 146 innings pitched. Amber Maxey provides the Saints with a second “ace” pitcher as she finished the regular season with an 11-6 record and a 1.46 ERA in 18 starts.
Sid Masso leads a potent Santa Fe offense that outscored their opponents 195-112 during the regular season. Masso, also a FCSAA All-State selection, enters the tournament with a .348 batting average, 42 runs scored, 19 stolen bases, and 17 RBI.
The tournament is a double elimination format and the winners of the NJCAA Atlantic district and the Gulf District will meet for the FCSAA State Championship. Both teams will qualify for the National Tournament in St. George, Utah on May 14-17.
